Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am an 18-year-old girl, height 5'3", weight 116.8 lbs. I have had a lip allergy for one year.
Whenever I apply things like lip balm, lip mask, lipstick, anything oily, or even face wash, or if it gets touched, it starts to cause intense itching, and my lips swell, and if it is too much, then tiny bumps type thing appear, it is from one year, and it is increasing only.
Please help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Based on everything you have described, it sounds like you may be dealing with allergic contact cheilitis, a long-term allergy affecting the lips.
This often happens when the lips are repeatedly exposed to certain ingredients found in lip balms, lipsticks, lip masks, flavored products, or even toothpaste and face washes.
The fact that anything oily or any lip product immediately causes itching, swelling, or tiny bumps suggests that your lip skin has become extremely sensitive over time.
Since this has been happening for about a year and keeps getting worse, it likely means the allergen is still part of your daily routine. The small bumps you feel are most likely harmless Fordyce spots.
For now, try to avoid things that commonly trigger lip allergies, such as:
Flavors and fragrances (mint, cinnamon, citrus, strawberry).
Beeswax, lanolin, shea butter.
Essential oils like peppermint, tea tree, lavender, or coconut oil.
Also, avoid lip balms, tinted lip products, whitening or foaming toothpastes, and let your face wash stay away from the lip area.
For the next two to three weeks, it will really help if you try to stop using all lip balms, lip masks, lipsticks, oily lip products, flavored or whitening toothpastes, and keep face washes away from the lip border.
Use only plain white petrolatum on your lips, applying it four to five times a day. It is one of the safest and least allergenic options.
A few other management options are:
To calm down the inflammation, you can apply Hydrocortisone 1 percent ointment twice a day for five to seven days. If the itching or swelling is bothering you a lot, taking Cetirizine five or 10 mg once daily for five days can help.
Once your lips start to settle, continue using Vaseline regularly, switch to a fragrance-free, SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate)-free toothpaste, and use gentle cleansers without fragrances or essential oils.
If the problem still continues even after avoiding all possible triggers, a dermatologist can do patch testing to help identify exactly what you are allergic to.
Please seek medical attention if your lip swelling becomes severe or painful, if cracks start bleeding, or if the rash spreads beyond your lips.
I hope this helps bring you some clarity and relief. If you have any questions or want to share an update, feel free to reach out to me anytime.
Thank you.
