How to manage cough in breastfeeding mothers?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am currently experiencing a cough, which I believe is affecting my two-month-old baby. While I am breastfeeding her, she has begun to have loose stools. Please recommend a suitable medication.
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
I understand that you have cough and a two-month-old baby. It is common for newborns to have frequent watery stools, as their intestines are still developing and do not absorb food efficiently. Over time, typically after the first few months, their ability to absorb nutrients improves, leading to thicker and less frequent stools.
It is advisable to limit the intake of cough syrups that contain menthol, as excessive menthol can decrease milk supply. However, there are cold medications that are safe for breastfeeding mothers. For instance, the cough suppressant dextromethorphan has been widely used during breastfeeding and is regarded as safe.
You may consider using cough syrups containing Phenylephrine and Dextromethorphan hydrobromide.
I hope this information helps you.

Thank you.
