Can a patient diagnosed with pneumonia and COVID 19 be able to recover completely?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Does pneumonia compromise breathing efficiency even after a successful treatment? My mother was diagnosed with both COVID 19 and pneumonia last year. She took treatment for a month and successfully recovered. However, she has strained breathing since then. Will she not be able to recover completely? Can you please suggest her some breathing exercises?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for the query.

I understand your concern.

Your mother is suffering from the post-COVID syndrome or long COVID. Viral pneumonia caused by COVID 19 virus does not usually leave any residue of infection. I suggest you get her evaluated once again and share the reports. She may also need specific medications to treat post-COVID pneumonia.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.

The Probable causes

The probable cause is COVID 19.

Investigations to be done

I suggest chest X-ray, CBC (complete blood count), and ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate). 2. CBC ESR (blood).

Treatment plan

I suggest tablet N- Acetylcysteine (NAC) 600 mg once daily for seven days.
