Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am 31 and was diagnosed with Crohn's disease affecting my terminal ileum two years ago. I'm on Adalimumab injections every other week, but I am still having abdominal pain, diarrhea, and have lost 15 pounds in the past three months. My recent MRI showed some stricturing, and I'm worried about bowel obstruction since the pain gets worse after eating. Should I be concerned about the weight loss and strictures? Are there dietary changes that actually help with Crohn's symptoms, or is it mainly about finding the right medication combination?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
There are definitely very good options for you, along with medications. Unintentional weight loss, as you said, without trying, is a major red flag for active disease. It suggests your body isn't absorbing nutrients properly due to inflammation, and the energy cost of fighting chronic inflammation is itself draining.
The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) finding of a stricture explains your symptoms. The pain worsening after eating is classic; as food tries to pass through the narrowed section, it causes cramping and pain. This is a clear sign that your current treatment plan, while perhaps controlling some inflammation, is not fully addressing the complications of your Crohn's disease.
While diet does not cure Crohn's disease, it is absolutely vital for managing symptoms, preventing complications, and maintaining nutrition. The right diet can reduce the workload on the narrowed bowel, easing pain and lowering obstruction risk, and your significant weight loss means we need to act. Your doctor may recommend oral nutritional supplements, which are designed to be easy to absorb and can help you regain weight and strength.
I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.
Thank you.
