Can PCOS affect pill-based contraception?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have PCOS and have been taking Yamini and Metilal (Myo-Inositol and Metformin Hydrochloride) for the past month. I got my period recently and restarted Yamini after a 7-day pill-free interval. I had unprotected sex yesterday. Is there a chance I could be pregnant?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Since you are taking Yamini (a combined oral contraceptive pill), and you resumed it after the seven-day pill-free break as instructed, you should still be protected from pregnancy. Birth control pills like Yamini are effective if taken correctly, meaning no missed doses and starting a new pack after the break. If you have been taking the pill regularly and correctly, the risk of pregnancy from unprotected sex is very low, even during the pill-free days, because the protection is continuous when the pills are taken as directed.

However, if you missed any pills or started the new pack late, there could be a higher risk of pregnancy. Additionally, the combination of Myo-inositol and Metformin is generally used to manage PCOS symptoms and does not interfere with the contraceptive effect of Yamini. If you are worried about pregnancy, you could consider taking emergency contraception, but this is usually not necessary if you have been consistent with your birth control.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Thank you.
