Can laser hair removal help lighten my dark underarms?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have dark pigmentation in my underarms. I have tried urea creams, but there has been no improvement. I am now unable to wear sleeveless clothing. Which treatment would you recommend for lightening my underarms?

I usually shave my underarms. Should I consider laser hair removal instead?

Please advise.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for sharing your concern and picture (attachments removed to protect the patient’s identity).

I understand how upsetting underarm pigmentation can be, especially when it starts affecting your confidence and clothing choices. Please know that this is very common, and with the right approach, gradual improvement is possible. The key is to treat the pigmentation gently and consistently, because the underarm skin is sensitive and easily irritated.

I am going to give you a step-by-step routine to effectively manage your condition. For lightening, use G-Peel 6 cream (Glycolic acid) applied only on the affected area on alternate nights. Use a very thin layer and apply it at bedtime. This helps with gentle exfoliation and pigment reduction, but it is important not to overuse it, as excess application can cause irritation and make pigmentation worse.

Along with this, apply Lacsoft cream (Ammonium lactate) once daily, preferably in the morning. This helps improve skin texture, mild thickening, and uneven tone while also keeping the area well moisturized. On days you use G-Peel at night, Lacsoft lotion can still be used during the day.

Some important care tips will make a big difference:

  1. Try to avoid frequent shaving, as repeated friction can worsen pigmentation.
  2. If hair removal is needed, trimming is gentler.
  3. Laser hair reduction can be a good option in the long run, as it reduces repeated trauma from shaving and waxing, which often helps pigmentation gradually improve.
  4. Avoid tight clothing, keep the area dry, and use mild, fragrance-free products.
  5. If you use a deodorant, choose one that is alcohol free and non-irritating.

Please remember, underarm pigmentation improves slowly, not overnight. Consistency and avoiding irritation are more important than using many products. With gentle care and patience, you should start noticing gradual lightning over the next few weeks. Continue this for at least six to eight weeks, and you can always contact back for any questions. I would be happy to guide you.

I hope it helped with your query.

Thank you.
