How can I make my son interested in studying?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have a 9-year-old son who is very lazy in his academic work but energetic in activities he likes. How can I make him interested in his studies? I am also a working woman, but I spend four to five hours with him when he goes to school and 10 to 12 hours on holiday since I work online. But still, I cannot understand him. I do not want to hurt him by using abusive words, beating him, and making him read, but I want to make him good in his academics in a friendlier way.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read the query, and I can understand your concern.

Thank you for taking help from a psychiatrist. I can understand your problem and situation. Being a working woman it is difficult to manage everything. It is great that your son is energetic in activities he enjoys. To help him become more interested in his studies, try incorporating elements of his interests into his academic tasks. For example, if he enjoys sports, you could use math problems related to sports statistics or incorporate sports-themed reading material. Providing positive reinforcement and setting achievable goals can help motivate him. Creating a structured routine and offering praise and encouragement for his efforts can also be beneficial. Remember to be patient and supportive as he navigates his academic journey.

You should take him to the nearest psychiatrist for a detailed evaluation of his IQ (intelligence quotient), ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), and SLD (specific learning disorder). Please check his vision; if it is weak, it makes him lose interest in studying.

I hope that you get your answer.

Please let me know if you need some help.

Thank you.
