How can one manage delayed periods?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have irregular periods, and it is delayed by almost 20 days now. I need to get periods in the next two days. I took a pregnancy test, and it was negative after a week of my date. I need to get them as soon as possible because I have a thing to attend and cannot manage with cramps afterwards. Please prescribe medication to get periods tomorrow or in the next two days.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through your query and understand your concern.

Thanks for sharing everything. Let us go step-by-step with professional-quality advice.

Summary of your situation: You have a history of irregular periods. Periods are delayed by 20 days this cycle. Pregnancy test done one week after missed period = Negative (very reassuring). You want to induce periods quickly because of an upcoming event.

First important point: Since the pregnancy test is negative (done after a missed period), pregnancy is extremely unlikely. Now, for inducing periods quickly, the standard medication doctors prescribe is usually a short course of hormonal tablets. The most commonly prescribed medicines are prescription (common protocol), which include tablet Medroxyprogesterone acetate 10 mg, one tablet twice daily for five days. Periods usually start two to five days after stopping the tablets.

Alternative option: Tablet Dydrogesterone 10 mg (Duphaston), one tablet twice daily for five days.

You will not get periods while taking the tablets; you get a "withdrawal bleed" after you finish the course. It is not instant (not tomorrow). Usually, periods come two to five days after stopping. Starting the tablets today will help you have periods within the next seven to ten days.

Realistic expectation:

If you need periods by tomorrow, it is unfortunately not medically possible with safe medication. Our body needs time to respond to the hormone change.

You can start Medroxyprogesterone 10 mg, one tablet in the morning and evening, for five days. After finishing, expect your period between two and five days later. Meanwhile, stay hydrated, avoid stress, and eat normally to help hormones reset.

If you want natural methods (less effective but safe), take warm compresses on the lower belly. Drink ginger tea or papaya juice (mild effect). Gentle exercise and relaxation. But these are not guaranteed, and tablets are more reliable.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
