Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a mother of 6 months baby. I got my period a few months back. My baby is on combined feeding. I breastfeed two times at night and three times in a day. Is it fine to not get periods for so long? I did pregnancy tests, and it is negative.

Please advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

It is not uncommon for women to experience irregular periods after giving birth, especially in the first few months postpartum. Breastfeeding can also delay the return of menstruation, as the hormone prolactin (necessary for breast milk production) can inhibit ovulation. In your case, it has been several weeks since your baby's birth, and you have already had a negative pregnancy test, so, likely, you are not currently pregnant. However, suppose you have gone more than six months without a period, and you are not actively trying to conceive. In that case, it may be worth consulting with a healthcare provider to rule out any underlying medical conditions affecting your menstrual cycle. In the meantime, be sure to continue practicing suitable contraception methods if you are not planning on becoming pregnant again soon. Breastfeeding alone is not a reliable form of birth control, as ovulation can still occur even while you're nursing.

I hope this information will help you.

Thanks.
