Why is my period delayed despite a negative pregnancy test?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am having a delayed period with no sexual activity. The first day of the last menstrual period was a month ago. The menstrual cycle is usually 28 days, plus or minus two days. A pregnancy test was done this month only, and the result was negative. What should be done?

Kindly advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and understand your concern.

Based on the given information, the period is delayed by approximately three to five days. Such a delay can occur occasionally, even in individuals with otherwise regular cycles. Since there has been no sexual activity and the pregnancy test is negative, pregnancy is not a concern in this situation.

A delayed period can commonly occur due to the following reasons:

  • Stress or anxiety.

  • Poor sleep, travel, or changes in routine.

  • Recent illness or fever.

  • Weight changes.

  • Increased physical activity.

  • Hormonal imbalance.

  • Thyroid disorders or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

Even individuals with regular cycles may sometimes experience a delayed or missed period.

Wait for five to seven more days; the period may start naturally within this time. Monitor for symptoms such as:

  • Abdominal cramps.

  • Spotting or brown discharge.

  • Breast tenderness.

  • Changes in stress levels.

  • Changes in weight or appetite.

Consult a doctor if

  • The period is delayed by more than two weeks.

  • This issue occurs repeatedly.

  • Three consecutive periods are missed.

  • There is severe pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, or unusual vaginal discharge.

At present, no medication is required. If needed later, a doctor may prescribe medicines such as Medroxyprogesterone only after proper evaluation.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.
