How do I get rid of vaginal itching and unpleasant odor?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have not had my period for the past two months, and I have noticed some changes in my weight as well as bloating. I am feeling very stressed and worried because I am wondering if I might be pregnant due to the delay in my period.

In addition, I have been experiencing vaginal itching, and there is an unpleasant odor that concerns me. These symptoms have been causing me a lot of anxiety, and I am unsure about what I should do next.

Based on the health information I have shared, could you please advise whether pregnancy might be a possibility?

Please help.

Thank you very much for your time and assistance.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com

I read your query and understand your concern.

I can appreciate how stressful this situation may feel.

A missed period for two months can occur for several reasons, including pregnancy, stress, hormonal imbalances, significant weight changes, thyroid disorders, or conditions such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome/poly-metabolic ovary syndrome (PCOS/PMOS).

The symptoms you mentioned, including:

  • A delayed period for two months.

  • Weight changes.

  • Bloating.

  • Vaginal itching.

  • An unpleasant vaginal odor.

IT do not, by themselves, confirm pregnancy. In fact, the vaginal itching and odor are more commonly associated with a vaginal infection, such as a yeast infection or bacterial vaginosis, rather than pregnancy.

Do not delay taking a pregnancy test at home if you have recently engaged in sexual activity. When you have not had your period in a while, a urine pregnancy test can provide you with some answers.

My recommendations are:

  • Take a pregnancy test at the earliest opportunity.

  • Consult a gynecologist if the test is negative and your period does not resume.

  • Seek evaluation for the vaginal itching and odor, as treatment may be needed if an infection is present.

  • Steer clear of perfumed feminine hygiene products and vaginal douching, as these might exacerbate irritation.

  • Try to control your stress levels because menstrual abnormalities can occasionally be caused by stress.

If you have significant abdominal discomfort, a fever, copious vaginal bleeding, or a positive pregnancy test along with pain, please get medical help right away.

I hope this addresses your concerns.

Please feel free to follow up if you need any additional clarification.

Thank you.
