Delayed Tanning

Tanning of the skin after sun exposure happens in two types immediate and delayed tanning. Immediate tanning is a protective mechanism of the skin that occurs immediately after exposure to ultraviolet A radiation of the sun and lasts up to two hours. The delayed tanning takes place 3 to 72 hours of sun exposure and may continue for weeks. In fair-skinned people, ultraviolet B radiation exposure causes delayed tanning and begins within 72 hours of exposure. In dark-skinned people, the ultraviolet A and B radiation exposure cause delayed tanning within 3 to 24 hours of exposure and lasts for days. The UVB-induced changes of delayed tanning are twofold more photoprotective than UVA-induced changes.
