Are there any new treatment options for severe depression?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have been struggling with major depression for over two years now. I have tried a few antidepressants, and while they help a bit, I still feel like I am just going through the emotions. I have trouble sleeping, no motivation, and my relationships are suffering. I keep hearing about things like TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation) or even ketamine therapy.

  1. Are those options effective for people who do not respond well to regular medications?

  2. What are the risks?

I am just so tired of feeling like this and do not want to give up, but I also feel like I have hit a wall.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through your query and understand your concern.

It sounds like you have been facing an incredibly difficult journey, and your willingness to keep searching for answers is a strength in itself. When traditional antidepressants do not bring enough relief, newer treatments like transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) or ketamine therapy can be effective options for many people.

TMS is a non-invasive treatment that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain involved in mood regulation, often with fewer side effects than medication. Ketamine, used under medical supervision either as an IV (intravenous) or nasal spray, can provide rapid relief of symptoms in some individuals with treatment-resistant depression, though it may require ongoing sessions and close monitoring. Both treatments have shown promise in clinical studies. Still, they are not right for everyone, and there are potential risks, like dissociation with ketamine or scalp discomfort with TMS, that should be carefully discussed with a mental health provider. You do not have to carry this alone. Consider connecting with a psychiatrist who specializes in treatment-resistant depression to explore these options further. The fact that you are still searching for help is a powerful sign of hope.

Notice that if you are ready to take the next step toward recovery, I am here to help you manage your depression with a personalized approach. Together, we can explore the most effective treatments, including medication, therapy options, and newer interventions, to create a plan that suits your unique situation. My goal is to support you in regaining control of your life and finding relief from depression. Please do not hesitate to contact me for guidance and ongoing care.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
