How is a dermoid cyst in the parotid region treated?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have a dermoid cyst on the left parotid region (about 0.7 inches x 0.39 inches) that I want to get removed. I was informed that the procedure would leave a permanent scar. The affected area is not fully covered by my sideburn hair. Is there a surgical approach that would minimize scarring or position the incision under the sideburn? Additionally, how much would the procedure cost?

Kindly advise.

Hello,

Welcome to iCliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

A dermoid cyst in the left parotid region is a benign, slow-growing tumor that contains tissues like hair, teeth, or glandular structures. It can develop in various locations, including the face, neck, and intracranial regions, and is usually asymptomatic unless it enlarges or becomes complicated. Diagnosis is typically clinical, but an ultrasound and FNAC (fine needle aspiration cytology) can confirm the nature of the swelling.

If you have already undergone these investigations, I would like to review the reports. Surgical excision is the preferred treatment, performed under local anesthesia. A linear transverse or elliptical incision is made over the swelling to remove the entire cyst with its capsule intact, preventing recurrence. While a small linear scar is unavoidable, consulting a plastic surgeon can help minimize its appearance. For cost estimates, I recommend checking with hospitals in your area, as charges vary.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thanks.
