Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I gave my 19-month-old son a single 5 mL dose of Zentel. Today I saw worms in his stool and in his potty area. What should I do now? Please help; he is not eating anything.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
In a 19-month-old child, seeing worms in the stool or around the anal area after giving a single dose of Albendazole most commonly suggests a pinworm infestation. This does not mean the medicine failed; it means the life cycle of the worm has not been fully broken. A single dose is not sufficient for pinworms. The standard and essential step is to repeat the same dose after two weeks, as the first dose kills adult worms but does not kill eggs, which hatch later and cause reinfestation.
At this stage, you should give a repeat dose of Albendazole as advised by your pediatrician. All household members should be treated at the same time, even if they have no symptoms, to prevent reinfection. Strict hygiene is very important. Keep the child’s nails short, wash hands frequently, especially after diaper changes and before meals, bathe the child daily in the morning, change underwear and diapers frequently, and wash bedding and clothes in hot water for several days. Poor appetite is common during worm infestation and should improve after proper treatment.
Please seek medical review if worms persist after the second dose, or if there is weight loss, persistent poor appetite, vomiting, abdominal pain, or anemia, as stool testing or alternative treatment may be needed. With correct repeat dosing and proper hygiene measures, pinworm infection usually clears completely.
I hope this helps.
Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.
Thank you.
