Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have been overweight most of my life, and now I have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. No matter what I do, my weight will not budge, and my blood sugar keeps rising. I am scared about long-term complications. Would metabolic surgery help me get my diabetes under control, or could it make things worse? What type of surgery would be best for my condition? Also, how soon after surgery do most patients see improved blood sugar levels?
Kindly suggest.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
I am sorry to hear about your struggles. Metabolic surgery, also known as bariatric surgery, can be an effective option for managing type 2 diabetes and obesity, especially when other methods have not been successful. This type of surgery can lead to significant weight loss and improvements in blood sugar control. Several types of metabolic surgeries include gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, and adjustable gastric banding. Gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy are generally more effective for improving diabetes control. These surgeries work by reducing the size of the stomach and altering the digestive process, which can lead to improved insulin sensitivity and lower blood sugar levels.
Most patients see improvements in their blood sugar levels within days to weeks after surgery. However, the extent and speed of improvement can vary depending on individual factors such as the severity of diabetes and overall health. It is important to discuss the potential benefits and risks with your healthcare provider to determine the best option for you. They can provide personalized advice based on your medical history and current condition. Please book a consultation with me if you would like more detailed information on any of these points or if you have other questions.
I hope this helps.
Thank you.
