How to manage muscle loss due to Semaglutide?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 55-year-old male using Semaglutide for diabetes and am concerned about muscle loss. I have been on Ozempic for six months for type 2 diabetes, and it has helped lower my blood sugar, and I have lost about 25 pounds. However, I feel like I am losing muscle along with the fat, and I do not want to become weak as I get older. Is muscle loss common with Semaglutide, and how can I make sure I am losing fat and not muscle? Should I be eating more protein or lifting weights? I have also heard that some people regain weight after stopping the medication—how can I avoid that?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Muscle loss and Semaglutide:

Muscle loss is a potential concern when using Semaglutide, particularly if you are not consuming enough protein or engaging in resistance training.

Preventing muscle loss:

To minimize muscle loss and ensure you are losing fat, consider the following:

1. Adequate protein intake: Ensure you are consuming 1.2 to 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight from sources like lean meats, fish, eggs, dairy, and plant-based options.

2. Resistance training: Engage in regular resistance exercises, such as weightlifting, to build and maintain muscle mass. Focus on compound exercises like squats, deadlifts, and bench presses.

3. Progressive overload: Gradually increase the weight or resistance you are lifting over time to challenge your muscles and promote growth.

4. Adequate calorie intake: Ensure you are consuming sufficient calories to support muscle growth and maintenance. A calorie deficit that is too aggressive can lead to muscle loss.

Maintaining weight loss-

To minimize the risk of weight regain after stopping Semaglutide:

1. Sustainable lifestyle changes: Focus on developing healthy habits, such as a balanced diet and regular exercise, that you can maintain in the long term.

2. Gradual weight loss: Aim for gradual weight loss (0.5 to 1 kg(kilograms) per week) to promote sustainable lifestyle changes.

3. Regular monitoring: Regularly track your weight, measurements, and body fat percentage to monitor your progress and make adjustments as needed.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Thank you.
