How to manage type 1 diabetes in pediatrics?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a mother of a 12-year-old boy who was recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. He weighs 121 pounds, and during his last HbA1c test, his value was ninety-two percent. The doctor mentioned he is showing early signs of insulin resistance. He is currently on Insulin, but we are worried about potential complications. His recent lipid panel showed elevated cholesterol levels at 210 mg/dL.

The teacher told us that he seems tired during physical activities and complains about frequent urination. We have noticed he drinks excessive water and also has occasional mood swings. His fasting blood glucose was 245 mg/dL during the last check-up.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

His HbA1c is high, and his symptoms are also due to diabetes. He needs to continue Insulin, and sugar levels need to be assessed regularly, daily, based on observed sugar levels; we need to adjust Insulin dosage. Since he is also having high cholesterol levels, lifestyle modifications have also become important.

  1. Plan for a balanced diet low in refined carbs and saturated fats.
  2. Encourage physical activities that are appropriate for his energy levels
  3. Be supportive of his goals and needs.
  4. Have daily conversations with him.
  5. Educate more about diabetes by connecting with support groups.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reach out in case of further queries.

Thank you.
