Does my screen use cause double vision, and how can I fix it?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am getting double vision after spending time with the screen, mobile, and laptop. I am working as a software engineer. What can help?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I went through the reports that you have shared. From the reports (attachment removed to protect the patient’s identity), I could make out that your left eye vision is less compared to the right eye; there is only a one-line difference, though.

According to your reports, the test result for vision shows:

  • Right eye: 6/6 and left eye: 6/9.

  • NCT (non-contact tonometry), (eye pressure) in the right: 21 and left: 16.

  • Fundus is grossly normal.

  • Back of eye extra macular changes are noted on the right side.

I have also noted your double vision problem. Coming to the possible causes:

  • Change in the glasses power - If the refraction was done six months back, it is better to repeat it.

  • More screen time - Eye muscle strain and fatigue, which can cause double vision.

  • Excessive screen time can also result in dry eyes. Dry eyes, though, usually do not cause double vision, but can affect the quality of vision.

  • Eye nerve problem - Rare, but could be one of the causes.

  • Retina pathology - Rare, but could be one of the causes.

Let me tell you how to go ahead:

  • Make sure you are using glasses of appropriate power.

  • Take frequent breaks while working on a laptop or desktop.

  • For dry eyes, you can use lubricant eye drops.

  • For reasons four and five, it would be better to get a detailed retina and neuro-ophthalmology check-up done with a specialist ophthalmologist.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.
