Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I was on Dronis-P (Drospirenone 4mg ) this month, and yesterday I finished the last pill of the pack. (24 pill pack) I take it around 10 am daily, and after my last pill yesterday, I started to bleed a little yesterday afternoon. Can I consider this as my period, or should I wait for the pill-free break to start the next pill pack?
Also, I had intercourse yesterday afternoon, and I bled after that. And I started Drospirenone 4 mg on day 30 of my last menstrual cycle. My concerns here are :
I am confused because usually I get my period five to six days after finishing my birth control pack. But this time, bleeding started on day 24 of the pill itself. If I start the next pill pack immediately, will I get breakthrough bleeding while on the pill? Or should I take the pill-free break and let this mild bleeding stop, and then start my next pill pack? Will I be protected from pregnancy during the pill-free break?
Kindly suggest.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
The light bleeding you experienced after finishing the last pill (day 24) is likely a withdrawal bleed, starting early, possibly triggered by the hormone drop. This can vary month-to-month.
Next steps:
Take your scheduled four-day pill-free break (as directed for 24-pill packs like Dronis-P).
Starting the next pack immediately could lead to irregular or breakthrough bleeding. Let this bleeding ease during the break, then resume pills on time.
Pregnancy protection: You are protected during the pill-free break only if you have taken all pills correctly and restart the next pack on day five. No need for backup unless pills were missed.
If the bleeding is unusually heavy, painful, or if you are concerned about pregnancy (though unlikely if pills were taken perfectly), consult again. You are doing great, staying consistent, and keeping it up.
I hope this helps.
Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.
Thank you.
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
Thank you for your reply.
So, when should I start my next pill pack? Should it be after four days from now? Also, yes, I have been taking all 24 pills consistently without missing any pills. Today is day 25, and it is supposed to be the starting day of the pill-free break, so exactly on which day should I start my next pack?
Kindly suggest.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
Let us clarify your pill schedule to ease your worries:
Today (day 25) is the first day of your four-day pill-free break.
Start your next pack on day 29 (after completing four full days off pills). For example: If your last pill was yesterday (day 24), count days 25 to 28 as your break, then restart on day 29.
Key points:
You are protected during the pill-free break as long as you take all pills correctly and restart the next pack on time.
No need for backup contraception if you follow this schedule.
Example timeline:
Last pill: day 24.
Pill-free break: days 25 to 28.
Restart pills: day 29.
You are doing everything right, just stick to the plan. If breakthrough bleeding occurs later, it is normal and usually settles. Let me know if you need more help. Stay calm, you have got this.
I hope this helps.
Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.
Thank you.
