My 5-month-old baby has a dry cough. How can I manage it?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have a five-month-old baby who had a cold four days ago. It has improved with cold syrup, but now the baby has been suffering from a dry cough for the last two days.

The doctor has suggested giving 1.5 ml of Hisover LS cough syrup (Ambroxol hydrochloride combination syrup) twice a day for three days. Is this dosage correct? My baby weighs 16 pounds.

Please advise.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Based on the details you have shared, there is no immediate reason for concern, and the dose prescribed by your doctor may be appropriate for a five-month-old baby weighing 16 pounds, especially since it was given after a direct clinical examination.

In infants, medication dosages are determined based on age, weight, symptoms, and the exact concentration of the syrup. Therefore, following your pediatrician’s instructions is the safest approach.

A dry cough for a few days after a cold is quite common. It often occurs because the throat and airways remain mildly irritated even after the infection has improved, and it does not usually indicate anything serious.

The Ambroxol combination syrup is commonly used to help loosen mucus and relieve cough symptoms. Please continue the medication exactly as prescribed for the three days, and do not change or increase the dose on your own.

You may also support your baby’s recovery by ensuring adequate feeding and hydration, using saline nasal drops if needed, keeping the baby slightly upright after feeding, and avoiding exposure to smoke or dust.

Please seek medical attention promptly if you notice fast breathing, wheezing, fever, poor feeding, vomiting, unusual sleepiness, or worsening cough.

If your baby is otherwise active, feeding well, and breathing comfortably, this is most likely a mild post-viral cough that should improve gradually over the next few days.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
