This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 21-year-old female. I have been experiencing extreme period cramps for about five years and am looking for medication that could help. I have sharp stomach pain, leg aches, vomiting, and sometimes nearly pass out from the pain.

Please advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Your symptoms suggest severe dysmenorrhea (painful periods), which could be caused by either primary dysmenorrhea (due to natural hormone changes) or secondary dysmenorrhea (caused by conditions such as endometriosis or fibroids).

Possible causes:

  1. Primary dysmenorrhea: Severe cramps caused by prostaglandins, hormones that trigger uterine contractions.
  2. Endometriosis: A condition where tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus, leading to intense pain.
  3. Fibroids or ovarian cysts: Noncancerous growths that can exacerbate period pain.
  4. Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID): An infection affecting the reproductive organs.

Medications that may help:

  1. Over-the-counter pain relievers: Ibuprofen or Naproxen, ideally taken before cramps begin.
  2. Prescription painkillers: If OTC (over-the-counter) medications are ineffective, a doctor may prescribe stronger pain relief.
  3. Hormonal birth control (pills, patch, intrauterine device): Helps regulate hormones and often significantly reduces period pain.
  4. Muscle relaxants: May provide relief for severe cramping.

Other relief methods:

  1. Heat therapy: Using heating pads or taking warm baths to relax the uterus.
  2. Diet changes: Reducing caffeine, sugar, and processed foods may alleviate symptoms.
  3. Exercise and stretching: Improves circulation and may help reduce pain over time.

Take care, and I hope this information helps. Let me know if you have any further concerns.

Thank you.
