What causes bad period cramps in a 16-year-old?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 16-year-old female of 5 '4 foot. I have questions about my period. I have been feeling bad cramps since my first period. Some months are so bad that medication like Tylenol does not help.

Some months, it will only hurt for two days, and some months for four. The first four months of my period, I remember throwing up almost every day. I am not sure if I have a heavy flow or medium. My main concern is the pain. Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read the query, and I can understand your concern.

Pain during this period can be severe and occasionally reduce your quality of life. The pain will get better with time and better after your first delivery. Pain is caused by the uterus trying to force the period out through your tiny uterine opening. For now, the management is to adjust to a more potent pain reliever than Tylenol (Acetaminophen) or to start you on combined oral contraceptive pills for about six months. Check treatment with Tenoxicam. It is better to take the drug at least 24 hours before your period starts. Consult a specialist doctor, talk to them, and then take the medication.

I hope this will help you.

Thank you.

Treatment plan

I suggest you take Capsules Tenoxicam 20 mg (milligram), 12 hourly for five days, and tablet Hyoscine 10mg, 12 hourly for five days. Start medication a few days before your anticipated period date. Consult a specialist doctor, talk to them, and then take the medication.
