Is homeopathy effective for treating my sister’s eczema at 35?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My 35-year-old sister has had chronic eczema on her arms and behind her knees for the past two years. She has tried steroid creams and moisturizers, which provide temporary relief, but the rash always returns after some time.

Recently, a relative suggested trying alternative therapies, and she has been asking whether homeopathic medicines are effective for treating eczema. We are unsure whether this approach is scientifically supported or if it might delay proper treatment.

During flare-ups, her skin often becomes red, dry, and cracked, and sometimes it even oozes clear fluid. Could homeopathic remedies actually help control eczema symptoms, or is conventional dermatological treatment still the safest option?

Please advise.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you so much for sharing your concern with me.

Your sister’s symptoms are consistent with atopic dermatitis, a chronic inflammatory skin condition characterized by dryness, itching, redness, and recurrent flare-ups. Many patients experience improvement with treatment but notice that the rash returns periodically, which can be frustrating.

At present, there is no strong scientific evidence that homeopathy can cure or effectively control eczema. Most clinical studies have not shown consistent benefits beyond a placebo effect, and because of this, major dermatology guidelines generally do not recommend it as a primary treatment.

Another concern is that relying only on alternative therapies may delay appropriate care, allowing inflammation to worsen; when the skin becomes cracked, inflamed, or starts oozing fluid, there is also a risk of secondary bacterial infection if the condition is not properly managed.

Eczema often recurs because it is a long-term condition with periods of remission and flare-ups; even when steroid creams temporarily improve the rash, symptoms may return due to an underlying skin-barrier weakness and ongoing inflammation.

Common triggers include dry skin, sweating and heat, harsh soaps or detergents, dust or environmental allergens, stress, and certain fabrics such as wool or synthetic materials.

Evidence-based management typically focuses on regular moisturization two to three times daily with thick emollients, topical anti-inflammatory treatments such as corticosteroids or steroid-sparing creams during flare-ups, antihistamines when itching is severe, and treatment for infection if there is oozing, crusting, or pain; in persistent cases, options like phototherapy or newer anti-inflammatory medications may also be considered.

These treatments aim to repair the skin barrier and control inflammation, which is key to long-term symptom control. If the skin becomes very red, painful, or begins to ooze clear fluid, it may indicate infection or severe inflammation and should be evaluated promptly.

Rather than switching entirely to homeopathy, it is generally safer to optimize dermatological treatment and identify triggers that may be causing frequent flare-ups.

If possible, sharing clear photos of the affected areas, details of the creams or medicines used so far, and whether itching worsens at night or after sweating can help guide a more targeted treatment plan and preventive skin-care routine.

I hope it helps with your query.

Thank you.
