How can one cope with emotional suffocation caused by separation from loved ones?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I feel suffocating with the feeling of my sister living away and my brother not living with us either and how they are much older than me and how it is just me and my mom. So, I feel like I really need siblings to be with me at home, and at least I need to have someone with me at home. I always wanted siblings at my age, but recently, it has been driving me insane. My sister lives in another country, and she will come back after a year, and she will be married. So, she will not live with us. My brother lives with his father, but he does not treat me like a sister, and we do not even have a relationship as friends. Recently, I have not enjoyed going out or traveling because of thinking how it would be if we were a bigger family or how it would be if my sister and brother were here. I keep comparing myself with others. I feel like I am being selfish because my mom is the best, and she does everything for me like my sister, but I am really tired of this. I imagine things and wish for things I never thought of or wanted that much before.

Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for taking help from a psychiatrist.

I can understand your problem and situation.

I think that you are experiencing a lot of emotions around the absence of your siblings and the dynamics within your family. It is completely normal to feel this way, and it is fine to long for a different family dynamic or more siblings to be around. It is important to acknowledge and process these feelings. Have you considered talking to your mom about how you are feeling? Sometimes, sharing your emotions with someone close can help alleviate some of the burden. Additionally, seeking support from friends or counselors or the nearest psychiatrist can be beneficial in navigating these emotions. Remember, it is fine to feel the way you do, and seeking support is a positive step toward managing those feelings and emotions.

I hope that you got clarity.

Revert in case of queries.

Regards.
