Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I have had a couple of seizures in the past year. My doctor says it is epilepsy and wants me on lifelong medication. Will I ever be seizure-free without medicine? Also, can I drive again if I stay seizure-free for some time?
Please guide.
Thank you.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and understand your concerns.
Being diagnosed with epilepsy after having seizures can be difficult to process, and it is natural to wonder if lifelong medication is the only option. Many people with epilepsy do become seizure-free on medication, and depending on the type of epilepsy, cause, and response to treatment, some may eventually be able to taper off medicines under close medical supervision after several seizure-free years.
However, this is not always possible and must be decided carefully with your neurologist. The goal of treatment is to control seizures and protect you from their risks, including injuries and long-term brain effects. Regarding driving, laws vary by country and state, but generally, you must be seizure-free for a legally defined period (often 6 to 12 months) before you can drive again, and your doctor usually needs to certify your fitness to drive.
Even if you feel well, it is very important not to drive until you meet your local requirements, as seizures behind the wheel can be extremely dangerous. The best next step is to work closely with your neurologist, follow your treatment plan, and ask about your region’s specific driving regulations so you can stay safe while managing your condition.
I hope this answers your query. Feel free to reach out anytime.
Thank you.
