Does EBV cause severe itching with bumps on the body?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I was 12 years old when I felt some itching on my whole body, right after school, in just a second. It bumps as a mark that is filled with blood. I started to feel pain, and so many other infection was occuring to my body.

The mark began to spread, so we went to the hospital for the test, and the doctor said EBI virus or bacteria in my blood that is doing that to my body. They feed on my blood, so if my blood is short, they will come to my body. After that, sometimes I see blood coming from my mouth, but my mom did not help me to go for the treatment, and now I am 20 years old boy of 0.0548 feet.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Thank you for trusting me with something that sounds frightening and has clearly stayed with you for many years. I want to first acknowledge your fear and confusion, experiencing painful, blood-filled bumps as a child, and understand that it would be deeply alarming for you, especially without proper follow-up or support. I can completely understand that this still worries you now.

From your description, the episode you had at around 12 years of age was a severe systemic reaction or blood-related condition, possibly due to infection such as EBV (Epstein–Barr virus) or another illness affecting the blood or immune system. However, the explanation that “organisms feed on blood and come out when blood is low” is not medically accurate, and the information was likely misunderstood or poorly explained to you at that time.

EBV is a common viral infection that can cause fever, body aches, rash, fatigue, swollen glands, and sometimes bleeding tendencies if it affects blood components, but it does not live in the body feeding on blood.

The blood-filled bumps, sudden itching, pain, and later bleeding from the mouth raise important red flags that should not be ignored, even if they happened in the past. Conditions such as bleeding or clotting disorders, platelet abnormalities, vasculitis, severe urticaria with purpura, infections, or hematological illnesses can sometimes present this way. The good news is that you are now 20 years old, and many serious childhood conditions either resolve or can be properly diagnosed and managed when evaluated correctly.

At this stage, what matters most is not guessing the diagnosis, but getting clarity. I strongly and sincerely advise that you consult a medical specialist or a hematologist for a proper evaluation.

You need basic blood tests such as a complete blood count (CBC), platelet count, clotting profile, and possible viral markers. These tests are straightforward and can give very important reassurance or guide treatment if needed.

If you are experiencing any rash, bump that comes and goes, or itching on your body, please feel free to discuss.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Thank you.
