Is it normal for eyes to tear up during a bowel movement?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
Every time I use the bathroom, my eyes water up, and it is almost like I am crying, but it does not hurt whatsoever when I use the bathroom. But my eyes still tear up. Why? Is this the norm?
Kindly help
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
Yes, this is normal and happens to many people. The reason your eyes water when you use the bathroom, especially during a bowel movement, is due to the vagus nerve. This nerve runs from your brain down to your digestive system and controls functions such as heart rate, digestion, and even tear production. When you strain during a bowel movement, the vagus nerve is stimulated, which can trigger reflex tearing, making your eyes water as if you are crying. This same nerve is also responsible for causing lightheadedness in some people after a bowel movement.
If you do not experience pain, discomfort, or other concerning symptoms, this reaction is simply a normal reflex. However, if you feel dizzy or weak or notice any other unusual symptoms when using the bathroom, it may be a good idea to consult a doctor to rule out any vagus nerve sensitivity issues. While it may seem strange, it is generally a harmless bodily response. Have you always experienced this, or is it a new occurrence?
I hope this helps.
Thank you.
