How can we improve eyesight in a 6-year-old with -5 vision?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My daughter is 6 years old, and the eye specialist has diagnosed her with -5 vision. She never mentioned that her vision was blurry or unclear before. Why did she not say anything? Has her eyesight been weak since birth? Is there any possibility of her eyesight improving?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Thank you for sharing your concern regarding your daughter’s eyesight. I understand how surprising and worrying this diagnosis may feel. Let me clarify a few important points:

Why did she not tell u before-

Children often adapt very well to reduced vision, especially when both eyes are affected. They may not complain because they assume that what they see is normal and have no comparison point. That is why routine eye checks in children are so important.

Was her eyesight weak from birth?

A power of minus 5.00 indicates moderate myopia (nearsightedness). This may not necessarily be present from birth, but usually develops and progresses during early childhood as the eye grows. Genetics and lifestyle (like long hours of near work and less outdoor activity) can influence its development.

Can her eyesight be recovered?

Myopia itself cannot be reversed with medicines or exercises. However, glasses (or later, contact lenses/other options depending on age) can fully correct her vision for daily activities. In some cases, progression can be slowed down with special lenses, low-dose atropine drops, or increased outdoor play. These options should be discussed with her eye specialist.

Next steps:

  • Ensure she wears her glasses regularly for clear and comfortable vision.

  • Schedule regular follow-ups (every six to 12 months) to monitor her eye power and do a retina check-up yearly.

  • Encourage at least one to two hours of outdoor play daily and balanced screen or reading habits.

  • With proper care and follow-up, your daughter can enjoy good functional vision and participate in all activities.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Thank you.
