What causes excessive crying in newborns?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My daughter is 25 days old and constantly cries, seems overtired, and feeds every 15 minutes.

What should I do?

We have given her Colicaid EZ (fungal diastase + Pepsin + Simethicone) and hiccup drops.

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through your query and understand your concern.

I can imagine the anxiety and the concern of a mother whose baby is crying and not taking the feed properly. We can definitely figure out the issue, and everything will be alright.

Hiccup drops usually contain an antihistamine drug, which can lead to a bit of sleepiness and a tired feeling in the baby. Also, excessive crying can make her tired.

At this age, giving Colicaid EZ (Fungal Diastase + Pepsin + Simethicone) drops, which contain digestive enzymes, is usually not required or recommended. First, stop these drops.

The number one reason a baby cries and wants feeds every 15 minutes is because there isn’t enough milk. This can be because of poor milk secretion, poor latching onto the breast or breast engorgement if there is too much milk.

  1. Check your breasts. If they are firm and heavy, express some milk first and then try to feed her. She will then be able to latch properly.

  2. A good latch means the baby is holding onto the nipple and the dark part of the breast (areola) together. If the baby is not latching well, he will swallow air, which can cause colicky pain.

  3. If your breasts feel light and there is insufficient milk secretion, the baby may not get enough feed and may swallow more air.

  4. Proper latching and effective sucking on the breast will help increase milk secretion.

For colicky pain, you can give Simethicone drops (Flatuna drops or Mylicon drops).

Continue vitamin D drops, which I am sure you have been giving since birth.

If she is otherwise well, passing urine and stools normally, has no fever, is breathing properly, and does not have any skin rash, then follow the plan mentioned above.

If there is no improvement with these feeding practices, or if you feel she has any other problem, please share all the details and connect with me.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
