Why does my child have a fever, cough, and cold for 5 days?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My child has had a fever, cough, and cold for the past five days. The fever was high earlier, but now it has reduced. The cough seems to have phlegm. Please advise.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Fever with cough and cold for five days, especially with phlegm, is most commonly due to a viral or bacterial respiratory infection. However, since the symptoms have lasted several days, close monitoring is important.

You can take the following steps:

  • Give Paracetamol for fever (as per weight) if the temperature is more than 100°F (degrees Fahrenheit) or if the child is uncomfortable.
  • Encourage warm fluids, soups, and frequent sips of water or ORS (oral rehydration solution).
  • Use saline nose drops and steam inhalation (if age-appropriate) to reduce congestion.
  • Keep the child slightly propped up while sleeping.
  • Avoid cough syrups in children under six years unless prescribed by a doctor.

Monitor for the following warning signs:

  • Fever persists beyond five to six days or returns after settling.
  • Fast or difficult breathing, chest indrawing, or wheezing.
  • The child is becoming very dull, not drinking well, or vomiting repeatedly.
  • Ear pain or severe throat pain.

If any of these symptoms are present, seek emergency medical care. If you can share the child’s age and temperature range, I can guide you on dosing and next steps more precisely.

I hope this helps.

Take care.
