Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My 5-year-old son had a recurring fever, cold, and cough for over a month and was managed with fever medicines. One day he got fits and had only a slight fever; otherwise, he was active during the day. Took him to the emergency hospital immediately, gave him medicine, and then only recovered from the seizure. He was in the hospital for one week and took EEG. The doctor said it was epilepsy and needed medication for a long duration. There were no fits previously. Kindly help.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Please answer the following questions:
1. Is there any history of fits in the family?
2. Was the child a normal delivery, and was there a NICU stay at birth?
3. How are his social skills, like playing with others and following commands?
4. Did the child ever have a seizure with or without fever?
The child has an ongoing infection, primarily in the urine, that may be causing the fever. Sometimes an infection can cause high blood pressure resulting in a fit. Hope they have checked my blood pressure.
Based on the report of the EEG (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity), the child has a seizure that must be controlled for at least two years, and the dose of the medications should be altered and adjusted as per the symptoms and seizure-free period. Please do not stop the seizure medication as the child grows up, there is always a decrease in seizure occurrence, and when there is no seizure for two years straight, we can stop all medications. But I would suggest getting an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) brain done to complete the workup and to have a stable diagnosis.
I hope this helps.
Thank you.
