Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am reaching out to inquire about the upcoming flu season, especially considering the recent reports about the severity of influenza outbreaks. I am worried about the health and well-being of my children, particularly since they are in the pediatric age group.
I understand the importance of flu vaccination, but I am curious about the effectiveness of this year's vaccine, especially given the strain variability.
Please help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I went through your query.
As a parent, one always worries for their kids and wants to take all precautions. I appreciate your concerns for your kids. The seasonal influenza period is typically from May to October, and it is recommended to give the vaccine before the season starts.
There are two new strains of the influenza virus recently been confirmed. The vaccine currently available does take care of one of the new strains. Influenza vaccines are safe and can be given to kids above the age of six months. The influenza vaccine has good protection, but no vaccine guarantees.
Also, be aware that it only protects from the influenza virus. Your kids may get an infection from another virus, leading to a common cold or a condition that looks similar to the flu. I suggest you follow good hygiene, do regular and proper hand washing, and avoid known contacts.
Hope it helps.
Thank you.
