Is it okay to urinate a 3-month-old baby the whole night?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My baby is 3 months old and breastfed. He is urinating the whole night and he is urinating only 4 to 5 times at day time. I have enough breast milk and feed every 1.5 to 2 hours. Do I need to take him to the hospital? Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

No need to take the baby to the doctor. You can wait for another 24 to 48 hours and keep an eye on his urination. If he is passing urine normally during the day and only missed one night as you already mentioned it is fine nothing to worry about. Feed him well at night before going to sleep. If his diapers are dry during the day and night for 24 hours and he is irritable and not feeding properly then he needs a hospital visit. As long as he is playful and well fed you can wait and see.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been observing him for the last few days and he is continuing to do like what I have mentioned above.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

If your baby is passing enough urine during the day and less during the night and otherwise happy and playful nothing to worry about. Just keep an eye that his tummy is not distended or painful. He might be developing this habit of passing urine more during the day as compared to night which is normal.

Thank you.
