Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My sister is 4 years old and will be turning 5 soon. She weighs 60 pounds. Is that normal? How can I, as her sister, help her?

Kindly advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

It is very kind of you to be concerned about your younger sister.

Based on the information provided, if she is almost five years old, is 4 feet 1 inch tall, and weighs 60 pounds, both her height and weight are above average for her age. While some children are naturally taller and heavier than others, her weight is also above average for her height and age. Therefore, it would be a good idea for her pediatrician to monitor her growth using a standard growth chart.

The most important thing is that she is active, eats a balanced diet, sleeps well, and meets her developmental milestones. Rather than focusing on her weight, encourage healthy lifestyle habits.

As her sister, helpful ways to support her include:

  • Playing active games with her every day, such as running, dancing, or playing outdoors.

  • Encouraging healthy snacks such as fruits, vegetables, yogurt, and whole grains instead of sugary drinks and highly processed foods.

  • Limiting screen time and encouraging outdoor play.

  • Being a positive role model by eating healthy foods and staying active with her.

  • Avoid teasing or making comments about her weight, as this can affect her self-esteem.

I would like to suggest that she should have a discussion with her parents about her development when she visits the pediatrician for her next checkup. Her body mass index (BMI)-for-age can be calculated by the pediatrician.

Could you please provide the following information?

  • Is her height of 4 feet 1 inch (124.5 cm) correct? That is quite tall for a child who is almost five years old.

  • Has she always been taller and heavier than other children of her age?

  • Does she have any medical conditions or take any regular medications?

I hope this information is helpful. Please feel free to ask if you have any further questions.

Thank you.
