Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I’m a 50-year-old man who had fundoplication surgery three years ago for severe GERD. It worked well initially, but now my GERD symptoms, like heartburn, regurgitation, and occasional chest discomfort, have returned. I’m worried the surgery may have failed or that I’ve developed a hiatal hernia.
Could this mean my GERD is back? What tests, like endoscopy, pH monitoring, or manometry, can confirm the cause? What treatment options are available if the wrap has loosened or if there’s a new issue? Kindly help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
Since you have a history of GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), it’s not uncommon for GERD symptoms like heartburn and chest discomfort to return. Triggers often include a hectic lifestyle, spicy or oily foods, smoking, and alcohol. Possible causes may include acid reflux, H. pylori infection, or a gastric ulcer.
I recommend the following tests: upper GI endoscopy, biopsy for H. pylori, stool for occult blood, and CBC (complete blood count).
Treatment may include:
Preventive tips:
Follow up with your test results.
Kindly consult a specialist doctor, talk with them, and take GERD medications with their consent.
I hope this helps.
Thank you.
