How to manage GERD causing difficulty swallowing?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 35-year-old man with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). I have been experiencing persistent throat-related symptoms for several months. I wake up with a sore throat, hoarseness, and a lump-like sensation, making swallowing uncomfortable. These symptoms often persist even when I do not have noticeable heartburn. I am concerned that this could be related to laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) or another GERD-related complication. Could my GERD be affecting my throat and vocal cords? What diagnostic steps, such as laryngoscopy or pH impedance testing, would you recommend to identify the cause? Additionally, what treatment options are available to alleviate these specific symptoms?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
Your gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) could be causing laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) leading to symptoms like a sore throat, hoarseness, and a sensation of a lump. Even without noticeable heartburn, stomach acid can reach the throat and irritate it.
I suggest you do the following tests:
-
Laryngoscopy.
-
pH impedance.
These tests can help confirm LPR.
I advise you to do the following:
-
Take proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) or H2 blockers (Histamine H2- receptor antagonists).
-
Dietary modifications (avoiding triggers like spicy foods, caffeine, and alcohol), and lifestyle changes (elevating the head of the bed, avoiding meals close to bedtime) are to be done.
Kindly consult a specialist doctor, talk with them, and take proper guidance.
I hope this helps.
Thank you.
