How to manage anxiety about waking up during surgery?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 41-year-old female, 5 feet 4 inches tall and weighing 127 pounds, a dance teacher, a non-smoker, and a non-drinker. I have had three successful surgeries related to bowel obstruction in the past, all without anesthesia issues.

As my surgery to extract a submandibular gland mass approaches, I am feeling anxious, especially about general anesthesia. My main fear is not waking up or waking up during surgery, being unable to move or talk, and experiencing pain unnoticed by doctors. How likely are these scenarios?

I do suffer from anxiety and occasional panic attacks. I am seeking professional anesthesiologist feedback to better understand the anesthesia process. Please help.

Thank you.
