How do I manage burning sensation in my chest after food?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Lately, I have been experiencing a burning sensation in my chest and throat after meals, especially when lying down. Last night, I even woke up coughing, feeling like acid was coming up. This is new, but my diet has been less than ideal. It contains lots of spicy foods and coffee because people eat out more for work. Could my diet be causing this? Should I be worried about these symptoms getting worse if left untreated? I have not tried any medications yet, just drinking water and chewing gum, but it has not helped much. What is the best way to manage this? Do I need to give up all the foods I enjoy?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through your query and can understand your concern.

Your symptoms may be due to acid reflux or GERD, often triggered by factors like an unhealthy diet, stress, and consuming spicy foods or coffee. These irritants can weaken the lower esophageal sphincter, allowing stomach acid to flow back into the esophagus, leading to a burning sensation and coughing. If left untreated, GERD can cause complications such as esophagitis or Barrett’s esophagus.

To manage symptoms, avoid spicy, acidic, fatty foods, coffee, alcohol, and late-night meals. Instead, opt for smaller portions, eat slowly, and consider elevating the head of your bed.

It is also advisable to consult a healthcare provider, either in person or online, for appropriate medication and treatment.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
