Can Crohn’s disease cause grumbling of the stomach?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 40-year-old male. I have frequent urgency to use the toilet. My stomach starts to grumble as soon as I eat something spicy. Can Crohn’s disease cause these kinds of symptoms? Should I follow a diet that can solve this issue or do I need medications? What type of diet can help me to get rid of these symptoms? I do not get any bleeding in my stools but have itching and burning sensation while passing stools. My stomach also pains after having food. I also pass too much gas.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Yes, Crohn's disease can cause symptoms like this. For your problem, I would suggest you to:

  1. Start walking, yoga, or exercising as health permits start gradually will help.
  2. Keep yourself well hydrated.
  3. Avoid fried, oily junk food, alcohol, non-veg, smoking, milk, tea, and coffee.
  4. Take a light, easily digestible, home-cooked diet that is balanced well unless otherwise contraindicated.

Regarding the diet plan, you should take a dietician’s opinion. I would like to know a few more things from you before prescribing any treatment:

  1. Are you taking any medicine currently?
  2. Are you allergic to any medicine?
  3. Do you take medicine for blood pressure, sugar, thyroid, or any heart ailment?
  4. Are you an alcoholic, smoker, or non-vegetarian?

I would advise you to undergo an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and get a gastroenterologist's opinion.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
