Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

The bump behind my top two front teeth is swollen and slightly tender. It has been this way for approximately 2 months now. I went to my dentist who suggested that I take out my Invisalign to see if that was the problem because my primary care doctor could not find any reason behind this swelling. My dentist says that is "stumped" and has no idea what could be causing this, as there is not enough plaque or tartar to be causing this much swelling. I also, want to mention that I have been having issues with dry mouth for the past several months due to one of my medications. I just need this to stop being swollen so I can go back to living a normal life.

Please help me. Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Please be aware. It is nothing but inflammatory gingival enlargement (in front also but localized) due to either any preoperative trauma or any injury in the past. I suggest you do not worry. Go for gingivoplasty (the surgical recontouring of the gingival tissue surrounding the teeth) and gingival curettage (a surgical treatment that removes the periodontal pocket's soft tissue lining with a curette, leaving just the gingival connective tissue lining). It will shrink the gingiva and restore it to its normal dimension. Please be assured that it is a tumor, not any debilitating disease but just gingival enlargement. It will be shown as regression after the treatment procedures. One precaution is you must avoid wearing Invisalign or any appliances at that place for at least 15 to 30 days. I hope I helped you with my answer. Take care.

Thanks and regards.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your response. Is there anything I can do for the swelling in the meantime until I can get in to see a periodontist?

Thank you

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I suggest you take warm saline rinses only 12 hours a day. Please do not take any medication since it will not provide any therapeutic effect. Also if possible please remove your Invisalign so that gingiva is not pressed under any active or passive force. Please feel free to ask for further concerns.

Take care. Thanks and regards.
