How can I manage deep cuts in my lower gums due to braces?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been having deep, painful cuts on my lower gum. I have braces, and I am unsure if the brackets are doing that, but they are very deep cuts. Please tell me, why is this happening?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Your braces are likely causing irritation and cuts on your gums, especially if the brackets or wires are rubbing against the soft tissue. This is a common issue when first adjusting to braces, but if the cuts are deep and painful, it’s important not to ignore them. Orthodontic wax can be placed over the brackets, wires, or any other accessories that are causing friction, allowing your gums to heal.

You should also rinse your mouth several times a day with warm salt water (half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water) to reduce irritation and help prevent infection. Avoid hard or sharp foods that could worsen the cuts, and keep your teeth and braces very clean to prevent bacteria from making the wounds worse.

Because the cuts are described as very deep, you should contact your orthodontist as soon as possible. Sometimes a wire may be out of place, too long, or a bracket or an appliance accessory may be positioned in a way that causes unnecessary trauma.

Your orthodontist can trim or adjust the wire, smooth rough edges, or provide extra protective materials. In the meantime, continue using orthodontic wax and gentle brushing, and monitor for signs of infection such as swelling, pus, or worsening pain. If you notice any of these, or if the cuts do not start improving within a few days, seek prompt professional care.

I hope this information helps you.

Feel free to ask further queries.

Thank you.
