Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Within the last few days, the gum behind my back molar has been tender. I only had top wisdom teeth, and they were removed years ago. I never had bottom wisdom teeth, and when I got my checkup, my dentist always checked to see if anything was there, and at my last checkup, there was still no bottom wisdom teeth. It has been this way for many years. The gum is not red or swollen, just tender to the touch, and the molar next to it does not hurt either. When I touched it, I noticed that the gum nearest to the molar pulled away slightly. It has never caused any problems before, so I am just curious if it is something serious or if I just ate something that bothered it. Kindly advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through your query and understand your concern. Something might have disturbed or poked the gums. It could be the bristles from the toothbrush or any sharp or hard foods like fishbone or fried foods. Since there is no redness or swelling, this probably will heal soon.

Meanwhile,

1. Avoid hot, spicy, and hard foods for the next couple of days.

2. Warm saline mouth rinses thrice daily will promote better healing.

3. Do not use a toothbrush over that region for the next two days.

This will heal soon. If you do not find any improvement in pain relief in the next couple of days, and this tenderness keeps increasing, it is better you visit your dentist and get it examined.

I hope this helps. I will be happy to help if you have any further queries.

Thank you.
