How can breast enlargement in men be treated?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 23-year-old boy. My chest is getting swollen day by day. I do not have any addictions like alcohol or drugs. I am not under any medication or taking any supplements for the last six months. I do not have any pain, burning sensation, itching, or other abnormal symptoms. I started noticing chest enlargement in the last one and a half months. I do not have thyroid or any other diseases. Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I have reviewed the pictures (attachment removed to protect patient privacy). You seem to have male breast enlargement, which is called gynecomastia. Gynecomastia is the formation of glandular breast tissue in males. Since you are young, it is mostly physiological and will gradually decrease with time. Gynecomastia can be treated with medication and surgery. Medication can be prescribed only after consulting an endocrinologist. Surgical options available are liposuction, mammoplasty, etc.

I hope this information will help you. Please revert in case of further queries.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

Will it gradually decrease since it started just about a month ago? I think proper treatment is required. I have read that gynecomastia can cause pain. Is that true? Are there any side effects in the medicines used for this condition? Please advise if I might require surgery.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

The medications used may have side effects and need monitoring. So I suggest you consult an endocrinologist and take treatment accordingly. But medication alone usually does not show good results. So it would be better if you go for surgical interventions like liposuction. It is only a one-day surgery and gives good results.

I hope this information will help you. Please revert in case of further queries.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

Initially, you said the condition would gradually decrease with age, and then you said a surgical procedure might be required. I need some clarification. It just started one and a half months ago. Also, are there any possible ways to increase my height? Do I need to consult an endocrinologist?

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I can understand your anxiety. Since it is increasing, I advise you to go for surgical intervention with better results, only if you are willing. In young patients around puberty, the swelling would gradually reduce after one month. But you have had it for the last one and a half months, and it is increasing. However, it can also resolve spontaneously. I aim to give you the best treatment protocol and never rule out medical therapy. You can go for medical treatment too. But surgical interventions are better.

I hope this information will help you. Please revert in case of further queries.

Thank you.
