Is crown scalp visibility after a shower normal or hair loss?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

After coming out of the shower, I noticed that the crown area of my scalp is visibly more apparent. I want to know whether this is normal or a sign of hair thinning or hair loss.

I have experienced hair fall in the past, especially during exam-related stress. For about one month, I used Anaboom anti-hair fall shampoo, Anaboom serum, and Cutimin Forte. While I did not notice a significant improvement in hair growth, the hair fall has reduced.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I completely understand how distressing hair loss can be, and your concern is absolutely valid.

Noticing the crown area more clearly after a shower is quite normal. When hair is wet, it tends to clump together and lie flat, which naturally makes the scalp, especially at the crown, where hair whorls are present, more visible, even in individuals with normal hair density.

Based on your history and the attached image (attachments were removed to protect the patient's identity), your pattern of hair fall is more suggestive of stress-related hair shedding (telogen effluvium) rather than permanent hair thinning. You have noticed that hair fall increases during exam periods and improves afterward, which is a classic pattern seen with stress-induced shedding.

The reduction in hair fall after starting Anaboom anti-hair fall shampoo (Procapil, caffeine, biotin, saw palmetto extract, and niacinamide), Anaboom pro serum (Procapil, biotin, caffeine, panthenol, and herbal extracts), and Cutimin forte (biotin, saw palmetto, beta-sitosterol, calcium pantothenate, N-acetyl cysteine, L-methionine, zinc, manganese, folic acid, copper, and selenium) further supports this diagnosis. Telogen effluvium improves gradually over weeks to months, and immediate dramatic regrowth is not expected.

Another important contributing factor in your case is vitamin D deficiency. A level around 10 ng/mL is significantly low and can contribute to increased hair shedding and poor hair quality. Until vitamin D levels are corrected, visible regrowth may be slow, even if hair fall reduces.

Hard water can worsen hair dryness and breakage, so installing a filter was a good step. However, hard water does not directly cause hair loss from the roots.

Considering the fluctuating nature of your hair fall, this does not suggest male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia). There is no progressive widening of the crown or recession of the hairline. In androgenetic alopecia, hair does not regrow easily with basic topical treatments, whereas your hair fall pattern shows recovery potential.

Overall, what you are experiencing is temporary stress-related hair shedding, compounded by vitamin D deficiency, rather than irreversible hair thinning. With proper vitamin D correction, continued gentle hair care, stress management, and patience, hair density should gradually improve over the next three to six months.

I recommend monitoring the crown area over time rather than immediately after showering, and focusing on progression over months rather than day-to-day changes.

I hope this helps.

Please revert in case of further queries.

Thank you.
