Is it normal for a 14-month-old to pass hard stool often?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My baby boy is 14 months old. He passes stool after every feeding or about four to five times daily. The stool is hard. We stopped feeding him milk on the advice of our doctor, and while the stool became hard, he continued to pass stool three to five times a day. His weight is 8.5 kg.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and can understand your concern.

Based on the limited information provided, your son is passing solid stools after feeding almost three to five times daily, and this has been occurring since birth.

He is currently on Festive-MZ, Immuno BS, and Enterozac, but there is no information on how long these have been administered.

  • Festive-MZ: This contains two antibiotics. Without a specific reason, I would strongly recommend avoiding antibiotics.

  • Immuno BS: This is a herbal medicine, and I cannot comment on its efficacy.

  • Enterozac: This helps maintain gut flora, which may be disturbed due to loose motions or the use of antibiotics.

Passing stools three to five times daily at this age, as long as they are not loose, is normal, provided the child is growing well.

To gain more clarity, I suggest the following basic tests:

    1. Stool analysis (routine), with a specific focus on identifying ova and cysts.

    2. Stool test for H. pylori.

If you have recently started Festive-MZ or have already given it for more than three days, I recommend discontinuing both Festive-MZ and Enterozac. However, you can continue Immuno BS.

Ensure your child follows a routine homemade family diet. Milk can be included two to three times a day if your child enjoys it. Additionally, try to incorporate a good amount of vegetables into the diet.

Please share the stool test reports, and I will advise you further based on the results.

Feel free to ask further questions.

      Thank you.
