Can intercourse in the last week of the cycle impact conception?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have a few questions. My gynecologist prescribed Nifedipine as folic acid. When I asked about its purpose, she said it was also folic acid. Can Nifedipine be used as folic acid? Secondly, last month she performed a transvaginal ultrasound on the 12th day of my cycle and found one follicle. She gave me two injections of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) 500 IU on the 13th day. However, I got my period again this month. Why did this happen? How many follicles are normal for conceiving? Thirdly, does having sexual intercourse in the last week of the cycle affect conception? Additionally, does drinking very cold water affect conception?

Please advise.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Regarding your questions, yes, it is the same as folic acid. Secondly, your implantation procedure may have failed due to insufficient follicles. You typically need more than one follicle for a successful conception. No, having sexual intercourse in the last week of the cycle and drinking cold water should not affect conception. I suggest you take one tablet of Letrozole (5 mg) orally once daily for one month and continue with the procedure again. Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with him or her, and take the medicines with their consent. If your symptoms persist, schedule another appointment for follow-up via chat, phone, or video consultation.

Let me know if you have any other questions. I hope I was able to resolve your query.

Thank you.
