Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I recently received some advice about improving my HDL levels by incorporating oily fish into my diet. I am curious about the nutritional science behind this recommendation.
How much of this oily fish should I eat to get enough of those good fatty acids?
I am a 62-year-old male, and to top it off, I am dealing with type 2 diabetes, so I want to make sure I am making the right choices for my health. It feels like I am juggling a bunch of health issues already, and adding oily fish into the mix sounds like just one more thing to worry about. But if it is going to help improve my HDL levels and keep my diabetes in check, then I am willing to give it a shot.
Kindly suggest.
Thank you.
Hello,
I am glad you chose icliniq for your medical-related queries.
I can understand your concern.
Oily fish, like sardines, salmon, mackerel, herring, and trout, are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which have been shown to increase HDL cholesterol, lower triglycerides, and reduce the risk of heart disease. Eating oily fish at least twice a week provides a sufficient intake of omega-3 fatty acids. These essential fats are known to support cardiovascular health and can help raise HDL cholesterol while reducing inflammation.
Including oily fish in your diet can lower this risk by improving blood lipid profiles and reducing inflammation. The fish can be grilled, baked, or cooked with herbs and spices. If eating fish is not possible, you can consider fish oil supplements. Consultation with your doctor is very important before starting any supplement. Create a balanced meal.
