Could new glasses cause pain around my left eye?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have a mild headache, but it is only around my left eye. It started when I put my glasses on this morning. I am just wondering if it is anything serious. I know the description is not very detailed.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

The type of headache you describe is localized around the left eye and starts after putting on your glasses, often suggesting an issue related to eye strain or improper glasses fit or prescription rather than something serious. Headaches caused by glasses can happen if the prescription is slightly off, the frame is misaligned, or the pressure from the frame rests unevenly on the face.

It is less likely to be due to a dangerous cause if there are no other symptoms such as sudden vision changes, severe eye pain, nausea, vomiting, or neurological problems. You can try removing the glasses for a while to see if the headache eases, use over-the-counter pain relief such as Paracetamol or Ibuprofen if needed, and rest your eyes by avoiding prolonged screen use.

Ensure your glasses are sitting comfortably and not too tight. If the headache persists, recurs daily, or is associated with vision changes, an eye doctor is recommended to check your prescription and eye health. If the pain becomes severe or sudden or is accompanied by vision loss, urgent medical attention is needed.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Thank you.
