What causes ear sensitivity in children to loud sounds?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My daughter has been holding her ears for almost four months, but recently it has gotten worse. She holds her ears when someone speaks a little loudly, watches television, or when the toilet flushes.

She holds them so hard that she shakes, screams, and cries. She had four hearing tests done, and the results came back as 'noisy.'

When I asked the doctor what that meant exactly, she said she did not know. Can you tell me what that means?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

As you mentioned, there were four tests conducted. Could you provide more details about these tests? The term 'noisy' is typically associated with the OAE (otoacoustic emission) test.

The symptoms you have described in your daughter, such as sudden intolerance to loud sounds, could indicate issues like recruitment or possibly behavioral concerns.

I recommend consulting a qualified ear specialist and an audiologist. It would be beneficial to perform a BERA (brain-evoked response auditory) test and other specialized tests to rule out all possible conditions.

Please share the reports so I can get a clearer understanding.

Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further.

Thank you.
